OpenBiome is the world's first stool bank—a nonprofit organization that is expanding safe access to Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) and driving groundbreaking clinical research on the human microbiome.

Since launching in 2013 out of MIT, our stool banking service has redefined the standard of care for an emerging field of medicine. When we began, only a handful of clinicians offered FMT, a treatment that has an 85% cure rate for C. difficile, the most common hospital-acquired infection in the country. Today we support FMT programs at over 1,000 medical centers across all 50 states. OpenBiome has delivered more than 50,000 treatments for recurrent C. difficile infection, radically improving the lives of thousands of patients that lack treatment alternatives.

OpenBiome has also emerged as a leading independent research organization.  We have developed a pill formulation for FMT, published more than 20 scholarly works and enabled the launch of 30+ clinical trials in indications spanning autoimmune disease, infectious disease, malnutrition, metabolic disease, and obesity, and neuropsychiatric disease, to identify opportunities for microbiome-based health interventions. The research that we enable is at the vanguard of understanding how the microbes in our bodies shape major public health challenges.

Position Summary: The Clinical Outreach Associate helps to maintain and cultivate OpenBiome’s rapidly evolving network of more than 1200 clinical partners.

Position Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Engaging with doctors and hospital staff by phone and email to address clinical and logistical questions and concerns regarding FMT
  • Supporting patient inquiries by phone and email
  • Articulating complex scientific topics with clinicians as well as the general population
  • Onboarding of new clinical partners with OpenBiome and helping establish a successful FMT program at their facility
  • Managing and growing relationships with partners at both the facility and network levels
  • Processing orders and providing support throughout the ordering process
  • Enforcing accounting, contract, and pricing holds on partner orders to improve compliance
  • Manage any external facing process changes with partners, ensuring smooth transitions for our network
  • Mapping partner organizations to identify the best points of contacts for general outreach
  • Working with a small team of associates to troubleshoot issues in a customer-centric and efficient manner
  • Entering inventory tracking information and clinical safety data
  • Working with our pharmacovigilance team to ensure potential Adverse Events from partners are reported in a timely manner

Additional Responsibilities / Duties:

The Clinical Outreach Associate is an entry-level role, ideally for candidates with 0-1 years of experience in sales, communications, and/or relationship management.  More than 1 year of such experience would qualify for Sr. Associate.   

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not necessarily required
  • Demonstrated interest in nonprofit management, sales, business development, and/or the life sciences
  • Customer-centric mindset and willingness to engage enthusiastically and confidently with partners and patients via both oral and written communication
  • Ability to learn quickly and articulate technical topics with confidence
  • Passion, humility, and excitement for to accomplish what needs to be done to meet a great public health need
  • Ability to multitask and work in an organized and efficient manner
  • Ability to work in a high paced environment with multiple shifting priorities
  • Open to receiving both formal and informal feedback from peers and management
  • Strong writing skills
  • Must demonstrate patience and empathy toward patients reaching out to OpenBiome
  • Must be legally eligible for work in the United States
